Why are we the best?
Having a huge private bear lease area
is a great start. Our territory takes over two hours to
drive from one end to the other and encompasses an impressive area close to 1300 square
miles. (that's well over three quarters of a million acres!) Then add in
the ultra conservative hunting practices we have adopted here at K/O
Lodge. Bear experts have determined that an annual harvest of one bear per
9.7 square miles can be sustained indefinitely while maintaining a healthy
population in our region of Ontario. This year we harvested only one bear
per 30 square miles! It's easy to see why we have one of the highest
concentrations of black bear anywhere in North America.
The Hunt Itself
Our hunts are five day on stand hunts conducted over
bait from either a tree stand or ground blind ranging from 12 to 100
yards. Rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders, crossbows and bows are all legal
in our territory. Hunters are encouraged to bring their own portable tree
stands, if they have one, as they add extra options which have proven very
successful in the past. When booking your hunt, please let us know if you
are a bow hunter or if you have any special requirements.
While you are out on
stand, our guides are always nearby in the hunting areas with you listening for
shots and checking flagging locations while inspecting and re-baiting your swing
baits to ensure your maximum chance of bagging your bruin. With your
assistance, our guides will do the tracking, hauling out and skinning of your game.
We have a giant
walk in freezer to freeze your trophy solid for the trip home. that will
ensure no danger of slippage are all included in your package. Transportation to and
from hunting areas is done in a combination of our vehicles and yours.
The day
of arrival is a free day for the hunters and you are welcome to fish our home
lake before dinner. Your guides will all be busy
baiting, checking stands and choosing which stands will give our hunters their
best opportunity to bag their game. With a stand to hunter ratio of more than three to one,
these are not easy decisions for our guides to make! On the morning of the
first of the hunt your guides will give an in-depth video orientation covering
bear movement, patterns and habits, judging bear size, shot placement, local
regulations and the daily routine. After orientation, we encourage
everyone to take a shot at our range to ensure their scope/sights weren't
knocked out during the trip up.
A typical day starts with breakfast any time
between 7:00 and 9:00 in the main lodge building, unless there is tracking to be
done. We usually start any tracking from the night before at first light
and our guides will usually be looking for all the extra pair of hands and eyes
they can find. After breakfast, and once everyone is back at camp, it's time
for photographs and skinning of the previous days take! Lunch is the main
meal of the day and then it's out to the hunting areas shortly after lunch.
What
to bring
A couple long sleeved shirts, long underwear, wool socks, rain
gear, heavy & lighter jackets (dark or preferably camo), head net, sturdy
hunting boots (waterproof), extra shoes for in camp, personal hunting gear,
thermos bottle, flashlight with extra batteries, skinning knife, fly dope (musk
oil, deep woods off), small flat cushion, soft gun case or bow case. You
will also need a solid orange vest (minimum 400 square inches) and an orange
hat.
We recommend for hunters to take only what they need on stand. A
small "fanny-pack" or something of similar size is perfect. A
large bulky pack will only cause you to be rummaging around in it making noise
and decreasing your chances of seeing your bear.
In the fall, hunters are
required to wear their orange when traveling to and from stand only and may be
removed once on stand. In the spring season, orange must be worn at all
times. All guns and bows are required to be in a case within half
an hour past sunset. Rifles clips must be plugged so as to hold only five
rounds maximum and all shotguns must be plugged to hold only three rounds.
